"MC" 12 yo young lady about 48 hours after adolescent scoliosis (AIS) surgery walking the halls and now taller than mom!

On my evening rounds, I umped into MC outside Pat's room. MC had severe back pain w progressive scoliosis and had surgery Monday. Her rib hump is gone, shoulders level  and her back feels better already.
MC and her family have befriended our scoliosis family who just had surgery, encouraging them!  We have 5 scoliosis guests up on the Duke Raleigh Orthopedic floor right now, w 2 more coming in tomorrow and Friday. These families hang out in large private rooms, and often get to meet and support each other.
MC will be heading home tomorrow morning after 3 nights in hospital.

Take care MC!  Get well soon!

Where do Hey Clinic Guests Come From? Filling in the "Hole" for Arkansas!

Over the past 4 and a half years at Hey Clinic, we have had the privilege of caring for guests from all over, 70% of which travel from beyond the Triangle area where we work and live here in North Carolina. Recently Emily in my office updated our website, including our USA Map which shows where people have traveled from to be cared for at Hey Clinic ( https://www.heyclinic.com/profiles/patients_from.asp)

Emily showed us the new web site this morning at our weekly Hey Clinic “Learning, Quality and Care Conference”, and was concerned that we had a “hole” in the middle of our USA map for Arkansas --- the only State in the middle and eastern USA where we have NOT had a guest!
So, if you are in Arkansas, and have scoliosis or kyphosis, we wanted to offer you a special welcome to Hey Clinic. We are only 18 minutes from RDU airport, and would be happy to get you a ride to and from the airport, so you can help fill in the “hole” in our map, while we also offer you service which is worth the trip!
I think we may start a new Hey Clinic tradition: have a special luncheon celebration at Hey Clinic whenever we have a guest from a new State or country. Of course we would offer up our traditional North Carolina Barbeque (or healthier salad if you prefer!) for you with our staff.
:)

There are several other holes on the map further east as you can see, although Hawaii, as our furthest west State is covered.
Last month, we took care of JohnPaul and his family from the Philippines which is even further west! Alaska and Rhode Island I think is also still open.

Whether you are from Arkansas, or Alaska, or right next door here in Raleigh, NC, our whole team works very hard to serve all of our precious guests and their families with great care in the same way we would hope to be treated.

Many thanks to Emily who is doing a great job updating our website. We look forward to see how your creativity will be put to great use!!

Vacation is definitely over: 5th scoliosis surgery this week, and it's wednesday morning!

This morning we just finished straghtening up this 17 yo young lady.
Yesterday did 2 big scoliosis surgeries: one thoracic double curve in adolescent, then a big double curve from south Florida in her mid 50's. That was a long day!

Also saw 1 yo boy yesterday w congenital scoliosis and kyphosis. Fortunately he should be ok, but you need to really keep an eye on congenital kyphosis, since it can lead to spinal cord problems w trouble walking, etc. Also saw 11 yo girl who had scoliosis actually improved 5 degrees since last xray a few months ago. Sometimes curves can actually improve, especially in the younger groups. I have actually seen kids "grow out" of their scoliosis!

Email I received today from mom of adolescent who had scoliosis surgery 3 weeks ago doing well with excellent new posture.

Dr. Hey,

I don't know if you're back from Italy yet, but I just wanted to give
you an update on Abby.  Three weeks after surgery she is doing great!
She is swimming and riding her bike and hanging out with friends just
like she used to.  We really feel like God has granted her a
miraculous recovery and we want to thank you for your hand in that!

I've posted some amazing before and after pictures on my blog.  Check
them out--I can't quit staring at the difference!
