How can we care for scoliosis and kyphosis and spondylolisthesis better with conservative care like physical therapy, high-tech scoliosis braces, exercise and other techniques? What can be done to improve surgical care, and understand choices for surgery, learning from those around the world? How can we learn from aviation and from Deming's principles of "Standard Work" to constantly improve spine and all healthcare?

12 yo Heather with the Double Curve Scoliosis Grows 3 inches!
I have been a bit delinquent keeping up with the Hey Clinic Blog the past couple of weeks! We have had some really wonderful people recently, including Heather, who is 12 years old, standing next to me at Duke Raleigh Hospital 2 days after her T4-L4 instrumentation and fusion for a severe double curve scoliosis measuring 67 and 64 degrees preop, and near 0/0 postop. Her surgery went very well, and she was excited to get her height measured in the "Homebound Room" --- now 3 inches taller than when she came into the hospital a couple days before!
I have a series of photos taken of her surgery from a special HD video camera mounted over the surgical field that I may share on another blog for those that are interested. Heather's family got to stay with her in her large double-bed "suite", including the first night, which was very nice. She is now home doing well, and looking to get back to school soon.
